Turtmann cultural trail

The Turtmann cultural trail is an award-winning village tour that you can hike on your own. Marvel at unique patrician houses from the 17th century, when the mighty Kaspar Stockalper left his mark on Turtmann.

The village of Turtmann has managed to preserve the majority of its stone-built townscape with around 40 buildings from the 16th/17th century. Under the influence of Kaspar Stockalper, splendid patrician houses were built in Turtmann. Two of these buildings are listed as national monuments, while one group of buildings and three others are under cantonal protection. Turtmann is listed in the federal Inventory of Heritage Sites that are of national importance (ISOS).

The Turtmann cultural trail, opened in 2004, is first and foremost a historical tour of the village. Winner of the Raiffeisen Prize of the Upper Valais Heritage Society and awarded the cantonal label "Valais Excellence", the cultural trail can be discovered independently and is mostly wheelchair accessible. You will walk through a village that was once one of the most important stage towns in Valais and is now a pleasant, quiet place to live. There are information boards on 18 of the historic buildings with the most important details. There are also QR codes where you can discover even more information, pictures and, in some cases, films. The cultural trail starts at the church. Follow the small brown information signposts in an easterly direction.
